The Grass Dancer
THE GRASS DANCER CHOOSE A CHARACTER AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH DECISIONS HE /SHE HAS MADE THROUGHOUT THE NOVEL Red Dress is one of the main characters on Susan Power 's The Grass Dance . At first , one may think that Red Dress is rather evil in that she kills people mercilessly . However , I believe that Red Dress has reasons behind her actions . My spirit never abandons the Dakota people though sometimes all it can do is watch (Power , .282 . this is one of the things which Red Dress

said which mover me deeply . At first I thought that I do not like her at all and I even viewed her as cruel but as the story went along I realized that she was not all that bad . I would not try to justify the fact that she used evil means in so as to acquire her end . However , what I am trying to say is though some of her actions were not morally right , I still believe that her reasons and her past made her do the things she did . I do not think that it is proper for us to judge people and tell them they should not have done what they did because we were not able to experience the tragedy they have underwent . Red Dress was there when the massacre happened and she saw it all . It left a mark on her heart which made her do things she should not have done . I believe that I would have done the same thing had I been on her position
If Red Dress was guilty of anything then I would say that she is guilty of loving her people too much . Her love for her people is very present on Power 's fiction particularly when Red Dress reproved Charlene for using her abilities for selfish reasons . Red Dress told Charlene that she should only use her power for the good of their people . One could not possibly blame Red Dress for discarding the English culture particularly their language after all the things that the whites did to her people . The novel of Susan Power is open to many interpretations but I strongly believe that Red Dress is one of the most unselfish characters in the story . Her love for her land and people is deeply moving and that is primarily the reason why I understand and I cannot help but agree to the things that she did , after all , what she did were mainly based on the love she have for her tribe
EXPLORE WHY THE AUTHOR CHOOSES THE SETTING HE /SHE DOES
The background or the setting of the story is very important on Susan Power 's novel . In spite of the fact that the story is fictional , Power chose her background carefully in so as to embody some historical facts especially those which show how the whites mistreated the Sioux . The Wounded Knee Massacre for one plays a significant part on Power...
