Every developed society has a constituted authority that oversees the governance of such society . These sets of people are responsible for the running of such a society . They are empowered to make decisions that are tailored towards making the society a better place to live in Although these people are empowered , they are constituted by the people to serve the people of such a state . Therefore , when making decision or passing laws , they should first consider the people because it is for the sake of these people that they

are put in positions of authority in the first place . This is what is expected of them and they should see themselves as responsible to the people who they are governing

However , in recent times , there have been occurrences where the laws enacted by the government become questionable . These laws , as the government claims , is enacted so that there will be room for development in the society . The question we should ask is if these decisions or s given are really people directed ? Do they , in the real sense of it , seek to improve the living conditions of these people or are they aimed at making the city fanciful and beautiful

In America , in a recent Supreme Court ruling of the case between Kelo v The City of New London (June 2006 , there was a ruling which allows local government to mandate estate owners to sell out in to allow private economic development . This is subject to the decision of the officials . Thus , if these officials believe that a project would be beneficial to the people of a community , the owners are mandated to sell their properties even if such properties are not yet dilapidated , and regardless of the fact that the success of the proposed project is assured

To begin with , we can view this issue from two perspectives . The first is that we must understand that although such rulings will definitely affect some people , development or progress does not come easy . There has always been a price that was paid for every progress that we can account for in our society . Nothing good comes cheap and so we should learn to be patient with the government . Oftentimes , people complain when they are to pay the price for progress but they laugh when these progress eventually comes . On the other hand , the above argument does not make the ruling right . When such ruling and made , it portrays the government as self-seeking and that they are not sensitive to the rights of the people . Although they might mean well by the projects they want to embark upon , they should not force these property owners to sell out When such ruling is made , people lose confidence in the government and may choose not to participate in activities in the society
