Political culture , as defined by various references , would refer to the set of beliefs that is shared widely among individuals in a society in determining who should govern , for what purpose , and by what means Likewise , it is also reflects the beliefs and values that individuals of a society possess (Unabridged Dictionary , 1998

The American political culture 's dominant shared values , as signified by the strategies used by political parties and leaders

First , classical liberalism , as we all know very well , is a dominant value shared among Americans . It signifies that individuals in the American society give importance to his dignity and their rational ability to control their ends . Second , equal opportunities , such dominant shared value has been consistently given importance and emphasis by the American society today . This is actually very much evident in existing public policies and laws created in to provide a better living for the people of the US as well as provide equal opportunities among individuals in the area of education , employment and the like . Liberalism and Conservatism are two popular ideologies of the American society , particularly of the American political culture . The ideology of conservatism advocates the importance of free markets , capitalism , and limited government . On the other hand , the ideology of liberalism promotes the importance of a strong government to provide a stable economy and economic security as well as protection for the rights of every citizen (Lecture Notes in Political Science , 1997

Both ideological systems are recognized in the American political system . Liberalism , as mentioned earlier , promotes economic improvement via government intervention as well as protection of the environment and the consumers . However , government intervention in social affairs does not favor those who embrace this particular type of ideology . Thus critical issues involving questionable moral issues are accepted by liberalists easily critical issues such as abortion and the like . As for conservatism , it is opposite to that of liberalism . Government intervention on social affairs is encouraged so as to regulate and or prevent the patronage of people to questionable moral activities such as pornography , abortion , and other issues of even nature

Political interest groups usually embraces the strategy of promoting plans , projects and the like that would compliment both of the above-mentioned ideological systems this is to ensure that lobbying of other groups can be prevented and or to try to win the votes of individuals from the other ideological system .
