General Motors Introduction The GM Company dates back to as early as 1908 , founded by William C Durant who was able to bring into the company several major companies which gave rise to its overall sales performance . However , after a couple of years , its profits slowed down , bringing the GM down with huge debts . Consequently , Durant the bankers ousted Durant from their list until , in 1916 , he was able to found another company that manufactured Chevrolet , and subsequently incorporated the GM into the General Motors Corporation . several highs and lows from then on , but had been able to maintain its reputation as one of America 's auto industry leaders , employing about 244 ,500 people in every major region of the globe , selling and servicing vehicles in about 140 countries . Internationally well-known brands manufactured by GM include Buick , Cadillac , Chevrolet , GMC , GM Daewoo , Holden , HUMMER , Opel , and Pontiac , among others , with the United States as its major market followed by China , Brazil , UK , Canada , Russia and Germany . Reckoned as one of the major auto manufacturers , GM reports to have sold 8 .35 million cars in 2008
