It is believed that homosexuality has been in existence since time immemorial . Whether people are gay or lesbian by choice or it is inherent remains unclear . Over the years , homosexuals attain differing treatment from varying societies with some mildly accepting them as others detests them and treat them harshly . The tug of war between those who favor the formal recognition of gay marriages and those who detests it has been incessant since the same sex marriage was recognized

formally in Denmark before spreading to other countries like the US . Gay or same sex marriages refer to the acceptable union of two people of the same gender . This will highlight the major issues surrounding the gay marriages or same sex marriages debate . It will offer a brief history of these marriages while placing it in both an economic and political context and thereafter it will discuss how the citizens can be involved in this debate

The US Supreme Court categorically defines `marriage as of fundamental importance to all individuals and consequently a `basic right . The right to marry is further defined as among the `fundamental rights to privacy .
