Freedom of speech in college campuses
Public universities have assigned free speech zones on campuses . These areas , which constitute less than 5 of the university campus , are places where students can engage in a meaningful dialogue (Hudson Jr , 2009 . Other than these places , the right of expression is still limited . Here , we are presented with a double whammy . Universities essentially have to maintain law and on campus . A complete freedom of speech can damage the cultural , religious social , and ethical foundations of a place or person . For example , an open speech about holocaust denial or homophobic or anti-Islamic

thinking cannot be tolerated as it hurts the feelings of a certain ethnic or religious group
Similarly , the choice of languages by instructors can damage the freethinking and reasoning of students . Freedom of speech requires a balanced approach in this regard . A professor or student can differ from each other but they have to abstain from foul languages or direct confrontation . Both the university administration and the student body have to reach a consensus on the limits of freedom of speech . This seemingly impossible task of consensus can only be achieved if both parties are ready to accept their roles as a beacon of light for common Americans . Any trends in public universities ultimately make their way into common society . Whether it was the protest against the segregation or Vietnam War , university students and civil society joined forces to struggle for their causes
Universities are the marketplaces for ideas and philosophies . The environment of a learning institution is bound to create rifts as the views of students and academics differ from each other .
