I . Introduction
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States (31st man to hold this office . Franklin D . Roosevelt , a Democrat , was
President longer than any other man , having been elected four times .
FDR , as he was called by the press was a magnetic , dynamic leader . He
led the country out of its worst business depression and brought it to
within sight of victory in the greatest war of all time . During his
tenure , he generated a political revolution , bringing government into
greater participation in American life than even before . As a result of
these sweeping changes , Roosevelt inspired more loyalty and aroused
deeper opposition than any President in history . He had served 12 years ,
1 month , and 8 days when he died on April 12 , 1945 . Roosevelt was the
seventh President to die in the office (Alsop , 2002 .
Thesis Statement : The researcher of this study intent to investigate
the life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt , thus , bringing out in-depth
discussions of what kind of life does Delano Roosevelt has gone through
before he became a president .
II . Background
When Roosevelt was first inaugurated on March 4 , 1933 , the United
States was in the fourth year of disastrous depression . He promised the
people a ``new deal ' Assuring them that ``the only thing we have to
fear is fear itself ' he attacked the depression on many fronts . He
experimented with many programs some were successful , others were not (Leuchtenburg , 2003 .
More far-reaching legislation was enacted under the Roosevelt
administration than under that of any other President . Many of these
laws were bitterly opposed a few were declared unconstitutional by the
Supreme Court . But bank deposits were insured stock exchanges were put
under federal regulation labor won the right of collective bargaining
and unemployment insurance and old-age pensions became part of the
American way of life .
Roosevelt 's critics charged him with being largely responsible for the
participation of the United States in World War II . His supporters ,
however , credited him with recognizing the danger to democracy of
victory by war did come , Roosevelt did not spare himself . Despite paralysis of his
legs , the result of a polio attack in 1921 , he traveled widely , building
morale and quickening the war effort (Freidel , 2003 . He attended
conferences with Allied leaders in Morocco , Egypt , Iran , and Canada , and
at Yalta in Russia .
Roosevelt helped to sponsor the United Nations and gained the support
of prominent Republicans so that it did not meet the fate of the League
of Nations . The conference that established the United Nations opened on
April 25 , 1945 , at San Francisco , 13 days after Roosevelt 's death .
III . Discussion and Summary
From 1907 to 1910 , Roosevelt practiced law as a junior member of a
prominent law firm in New York City . In 1910 , after being a delegate to
the Democratic State Convention , he was asked by the party to become the
