It was after World War I that the economy began to rise dramatically It seemed like after a long and exhausting war , America had come out on top with some spare change ' Unchecked money , however is usually not a good thing . While the country seemed to be on top of the world with a financial high and prosperity to those who thought there would never be another good day during the war , a fall came swiftly with the crash of the Stock

Market in 1929 . Immediately after the crash , came a period in the country called the Great Depression that was a devastation to the United States (http /www .marist .edu

During the Great Depression , many American families struggled to survive . Not only was daily living dreadfully different than the lush ' life they lived right after the war , but it seemed most unbearable and almost like a cruel joke

Perhaps the most amount of pressure rested upon fathers , who were viewed as the head of the household and usually the sole provider for the household . Work began getting more and more difficult to come by

Those who had once had suitable , stable jobs , in some cases resorted to stealing food - the basic staple for living . Many fathers , who grew extremely depressed and felt worthless for being reduced to such desperation , even took their own lives to escape the new , bleak life that seemed before them

Many of the lower-class families lost their houses and migrated from town to town to find any means of survival and providing for their families . Desperate families even resorted to living ' in homes constructed of packing crates and boxes

The number of people who had to do this increased so much that these houses ' earned a name - Hoovervilles (http /www .marist .edu /summerscholars /96 /ovs .htm

Although the upper-class was inconvenienced by the Great Depression they were not nearly in the desperate , sad state that the lower-class was in . Although they were not able to socialize as they used to be , the men did have steady jobs and were able to provide for their families Whether upper-class or lower-class , however , the country did seem to be taking a downward spiral into destitution

It was during this time that America needed some kind of hero who would fly in with a red cape and save them of their sorrows . That hero came in the form of the thirty-second president , Franklin Delano Roosevelt , a charming , suave man whose paralysis in his legs perhaps made him more humble and appealing to people . By his side and the brains ' behind the New Deal was his wife , Eleanor , who was one of the most active first ladies in history
