James Bradley himself is a son of one of these brave flag raisers , and this book is a tribute by a son to his father . To the family , John Bradley had never spoken about photograph or war , but when he died at the age of seventy his family members found among his belongings some of the closed boxes of letters and photos . James Bradley studied these documents and photographs and traced the military life of his father and other soldiers of his company . Following the details of these documents he went to Iwo Jima and produced classic version of heroic battles fought in its lands that 's part of the Pacific island-an island that was full of Japanese tunnels and 22 ,000 defenders who would ultimately fight to the last man

The whole expedition was considered as the bloodiest battles of Second World War , which involved five marines and one Navy Corpsman who had kept a replacement flag on the top of Mt Suribachi . When Joe Rosenthal took the photograph , he was not sure he would get his photographs because the film would have to be taken to Hawaii in plane for developing before it could be sent back to the United States . But once the photograph came out , it spread all over the world and had astonished every one as the world saw the Marines had already occupied Iwo Jima even before the start of the actual battle . The photograph gave hope to the nation who was already deeply frustrated because of war . But only three flag raisers could see the peaceful days as the rest sacrificed their lives within days they raised the new Flag
