Free will is a philosophical concept that sees man as a rational being capable of choice , rather than a being who only follows a preordained path . Being so , it is necessarily connected to the concept of moral choice and responsibility
Free will has been discussed lengthily over time by various thinkers and philosophers . My presentation shall walk you through the basic beliefs held about the of free will throughout the development of human thought and philosophy
The concept of free will was born among the inquiring minds of ancient Greek philosophers , although they did not pursue the theory so much at the time . In ancient Greece , people had many philosophical concerns and assumptions that the concept of free will did not exactly appeal to the philosophers
Free will found itself blossoming as a concept with the advent of the Christian religion , because its foundation is moral philosophy . Thus the element of human and rational choice became the center of attention . Finally , modern philosophy gave a different turn on the subject incorporating metaphysical ideas and philosophical schools such as materialism and determinism into the traditional notion of free will
II . Different Versions of the Theory
Free will has evolved and encroached upon another branch of study namely , psychology
Free will as a form of psychological category implies the evaluation of human actions identifying a certain deed to be positive or negative . We are the master of our thoughts and actions . The potential scholar who could have been raised in the family the members of which worship scientific innovations and progress finds himself /herself in identical situation as well . Consequently , human decisions are motivated by family and stereotypes
Free will can be classified according to its perceived bases . One such basis is rational deliberation , which means that free will allows a person to make a choice depending on his values and desires
Free will as an incident of ownership refers to the quality of free will as personal to each individual . Thus , a person who exercises a choice makes such choice his own
Causation enters the picture by providing rational justifications for one 's choices . It is believed that such reasons cause the making of a choice , or the exercise of free will
