The Americans willingness to fight resulted from the belief that the survival of their nation was at stake . One of the main explanations given for the origin of war is slavery . There was no form of compromise to solve the differences that had risen between the free and slave states on the national governments power to prohibit slavery in the territories . Other factors that contributed to the war include party politics , economics and

Every time a new state joined the Union there where worries over the state becoming a slave state or a free one (Rhodes and Beach Long , 28 The admission of Missouri State as a slave state would give the slave states control over the senate a move that would eventually lead to conflict . To prevent this conflict both the free and slave states were to be allowed the same number of Senators . Each state had the same number of Senators regardless of the population . It was thought that the admission of Missouri would offset this balance and ultimately cause a war over slavery . This was solved by the Compromise of 1820 . Missouri was admitted as a slave state and to counter balance this Maine was admitted as a free state .
