Question One : Identify five challenges that inhibit the establishment of stable governments in developing countries . Use specific examples from two or more countries discussed in the Graham text to illustrate your answer

Solution

The developing countries , and more especially the ones in the African are characterized by not having stable governments that are certain to take care of the citizenry interests . The failure to establish stable government makes it difficult for the countries to meet the needs

of the citizenry and this can be attributed to a number of factors . Some of the challenges that inhibit the establishment of stable governments in this countries include

i ) Crude constitutions

Most of the constitutions that are used in governing the government affairs in the developing countries are unfavourable for establishing a stable government Adenikinju 2007 . This is based in terms of the process of law making and enforcement , and also the division of power across the agencies of the governments . This follows from the reason that most countries had adapted the constitutions that were developed during the colonial times , which were meant to serve a different purpose . For example , in Kenya , the country is still using the constitution that was used during the colonial period , that concentrates all the powers to the president . This situation paves an opportunity over which the militia groups are formed that are meant to threaten the government operations over the exercise of powers

ii ) External interference

The developing countries are prone to external interference from other countries of the worlds more especially the developed world countries including also their neighbours . The interference arises as a result of the other countries extending their interests to other countries , which later cause instability on the developing countries ' governments . This is evident in the situation where Ethiopia in conjunction with the United States interfered with the Somalia government operations on the reason of fighting against terrorism , thus causing instability

iii ) Poverty

Poverty is also another characteristic of the developing countries that pose a threat to respective government stabilities . The high poverty level in the developing counties makes them very dependent on foreign aids , in the countries financing their budgets (Sehlapelo , 2005 . The countries that offer the aids normally attach conditions on the aids that are certain to affect the government operations . Some of the conditions are likely to affect the government stability and more especially the ones that direct on how the government should carry out its affairs . This is evident on what is happening in Zimbabwe where the foreign countries are threatening to withdraw their aids if the President does not operate according to their demands , thus the possibility of their happening governmental instability

iv ) Ethnicity

Ethnicity is another challenge that cause instability among the developing countries ' governments . There occurs the possibility of ethnic groups grouping together to develop a hatred against the other groups in the country . This posses a threat of dividing the country as the leaders of the...
