The Chicago police department (CPD ) is the second largest in the united states , with over 13 000 sworn officers and 2600 other employees who reinforce law in the city of Chicago . It was created in 1837 and is under the command of the city mayor . Currently Jody J .P . Weis is the superintendent of police and the head of CPD . It is structured into five bureaus namely Bureau

of Administrative Services , Bureau of Investigative Services , Bureau of Patrol , Bureau of Professional Standards and the Bureau of Strategic Deployment . Under these departments , there are specialization units to deal with specific types of crimes . Under the bureau of investigational services is where we find units that collect evidence at crime scenes , gather forensic reports by chemical and microscopic analysis , investigate major accidents , follow trails of fugitives and apprehend them , and also do detective work Further to that this department has the duties of investigating sensitive matters of national security , participate in under cover work follow money trails in fraud cases as well as nab corruption cases Others include : bomb and arson analysis , cold case examination , civil right violation , kidnapping , espionage , monitoring court authorized wire taps , conduct interviews and even participate in raids .
