Post-war , Britain 's global status has deteriorated This was evidenced by the rise of the American government in the international trade however , this did not stop people from different countries and of different races to migrate to Britain . The British community was alarmed with the influx of immigrants as it posed a threat to the national identity of the locals . The stress on color became an issue among

the people and discrimination grew rampant in all corners of the country . The reality of the issue on racial discrimination was undeniably so that it became a salient subject for discussion and portrayal in the film industry in those times . Only the likes of Basil Dearden tried to tackle this particular social problem in films in the hope of showcasing the effects of such issue to the community and the people affected by it
Basil Dearden was born Basil Dear on January 1 , 1911 . Before venturing into film , he worked as an assistant stage manager at the Grand theatre Fulham and eventually became a general stage manager for the theatrical enterprises of the impresario Basil Dean .
