New York in this novel is preoccupied after the attacks by the performance artists recognised as the Falling Man , who dangles himself upside down from the bridges and balconies across the city in an amazed replication of the unidentified victim . This novel spotlights on a small gamut of characters in the aftermath of 9 /11 attack . This main character of the novel , Keith , an office worker in one of the towers who fortunately managed to escape and Lianne , the estranged wife of Keith to whom he again reunites , her mother and her mother 's boyfriend , a cynically provocative European art dealer and Keith and Lianne 's nine year old son , who searches the skies with binoculars for the revisit of a man called Bin Lawton

The novel starts with afterward ' with quietly dreadful scenery of New York City 's streets engulfed with smoke and strewed with rubble , through which an unrecognisable man staggers , carrying a briefcase that is not apparently of his own .
