Fallacies
In the New York times editorial Of Shame and Face ' the author condemns the prosecution of New York Times journalist Zhao Yan by the Chinese government , whose prosecution was seen as a warning to anyone who dared report the truth in China ' Zhao was supposedly arrested for disclosing state secrets , because of a report from him that former President Jiang Zemin was ready to give up his final post as military chief . Although the state secrets charge was dropped , the writer states that a specious ' fraud charge was tacked on ' later in the

Chinese government 's attempt to save face
The author states : China needs to be told that it is not off the hook [ .] China should be ashamed of this abuse of its legal system and of the mistreatment of Mr . Zhao . There is no face to be saved so long as his conviction stands ' The fallacy here is a red herring , specifically an appeal to the audience 's cognizance of the shameful ' aspects of the behavior of the Chinese government , when in fact shame may be irrelevant to the occurrences . The article should instead have focused on what exactly is not right ' in what happened , i .e . that the Chinese government tacked on ' a fraud charge merely in to preserve its appearance of integrity
In the article Don 't Marry a Career Woman , published by Forbes magazine and written by editor Michael Noer , he conjectures that marrying a career woman is a recipe for trouble - that marriage with women who work outside the home would mean a greater probability for unhappiness , dissatisfaction , infidelity , and divorce . Noer cites a number of studies pointing to and supporting this line of reasoning
He opens with : Guys : A word of advice . Marry pretty women or ugly ones . Short ones or tall ones . Blondes or brunettes . Just , whatever you do , don 't marry a woman with a career ' and : to put it bluntly , the more successful she is the more likely she is to grow dissatisfied with you
What he is doing is creating a false dilemma , a bifurcation , wherein he argues that a man should either marry a woman without a career , or face the consequences ' He essentially lumps women into career women and home makers ' thereby weakening his arguments . However , this seems to be the very essence of his article , so I cannot say that he should instead have focused on something else his whole article is what he should have rewritten
