This strategic location allowed for easy expansion initially and to access to territories after conquering . This location would also allow for easy trade and travel . The Romans had already occupied a little less than half of Western Eurasia , and their influence was highly felt there and throughout all of Eurasia
Major cities during the height of the Roman Empire were Rome , Athens Byzantium , Thessalonika , Trapezius , Antioch , Jerusalem , Thebes Alexandria , Cyrene , Tripoli , Carthage , Gaul , and Londinium . Most of these important cities were port cities , established near or around a passage to the Mediterranean , allowing for easy trade and military access . This is one way the Romans were able to keep control of their territories
