Thus depriving them of their basic right of freedom and enslaving them to feed them like a dog and get the work done on time like a donkey
The servants however , were better off in most of the cases as compared to a house field slave
The slaves , for example , were always deprived of not only the normal human wants but the necessities of life as well . They weren 't given new clothes to wear and had to suffice on the piece of cloth they had on their bodies despite the wear and tear due to the heavy work they were made to do . They had to fulfill their hunger with whatever amount and whichever thing they were given to eat . The house maiden use to spit into the left over food that was to be given to the slaves to make it look worse
Whereas the servants had the same left over (house cooked ) food that their employers had in for their meal . The servants were given the old clothes of the family to wear . So a lot of times they had better clothing
The living accommodation of the servants was also better than that of the slaves . There are many cases where the servants were treated like the house owners children and received affection and were taken good care of . Thus as a result what happened is that close bonds of affection and friendship usually developed between the servant and the master Most of the times , the servant was also provided education by the house family members
As for the slaves , despite several years of humble service they seldom received any mercy . In very rare cases , even though it was illegal , some slave owners were kind enough to treat their slaves as humans . Trusted house slaves who had been serving through out their life to the master /or his family were sometimes promised their freedom when their master 's died . However , there are many cases where this promise was never kept afterwards
