Compound documents are actually documents that are created by putting together data from more than one software package . In the case of Microsoft excel , a compound document can arise from the embedding of data from other applications . This is sometimes done by embedding data from other Microsoft office applications , including Microsoft PowerPoint , Microsoft Word or Microsoft Access . To do this , the OLE (Object linking and embedding technology ) is the name of the process that facilitates this functionality

p Secondly , a compound document can arise from the saving of a document in dual formats . For instance , Microsoft recently released the Office 2007 version of its array of office applications . This included Microsoft Excel . However , the format of this new version is quite different from that of the previous versions . In to streamline the new version with the older ones , Office 2007 allows users to save their documents in dual formats whereby the older versions can read the document while the new version , which is different , can also open them However , these s are still saved as only one document , making it a dual compatibility . This results in a compound document

In the light of this I would want to create compound documents in to be able to open my documents in the older versions of Microsoft office while still being able to work on it on the Office 2007
