Upon realizing independence , African countries came together and formed the Organization of African Unity . This was a body that was aimed at spearheading most of the problems that the African countries were facing . In particular it was aimed at resolving crisis which were facing most African countries when they were given independence . OAU was formed by pan-africanists who had been spearheading the granting of independence to these countries . It main goal was to bring all heads of African state together and to spearhead independence of African countries which were still under colonial rule including Zimbabwe , South Africa and others

It is estimated that more than half of the residents in the continent live on less than one dollar a day which is the UN measures to poverty line . Therefore is means most of the population lives below poverty line . There is still high level of illiteracy in the continent as more and more children drop out of school in to help their parents look for basic needs due to abject poverty . The systems of education in the continent provide low quality of education and most of those who are educated cannot get employment Apparently all these problems have been compounded by high rate of population growth with most of the countries recording fertility rate of more than 5 . Despite these above problems there is high rate of economic inequality in the continent and a common site is a large sprawling slum in neighborhood with upper class estate .
