Summary

Many businesses and organizations have fallen and failed because of ethical dilemmas most commonly associated with conflict of interest Conflict of interest is a situation where a decision has two different and opposing interests which both are often hard to disregard . Leaders and managers will always have to face these dilemmas in their daily activities and decisions

Ethics management is not always about doing the right thing . Most of the time decisions are challenge with right versus right dilemmas which cannot be solved simply

by telling members to do what 's good for the organization and avoid what 's evil . There are four primary good versus good dilemmas in ethics management : truth versus loyalty (shortcomings of the organization remain secret to protect its interests justice versus mercy (should the organization punish an offender , knowing that mercy and second chance will reform that individual short term versus long term (present advantages or future stability and individual versus community (should individual members sacrifice their interest for the good of a policy not supportive of them

Ethical conflicts are supposed not to be taken by ethics managers and leaders alone . Most of the time it requires the attention of members affected by the conflicting interests . Professor Chris MacDonald of Saint Mary 's University in Halifax , Nova Scotia , Canada presented a method on solving ethical dilemmas in an organization . He suggests that associations should first ask questions like , Are we really facing a dilemma ' and Are we comfortable with our decision ' Also , deciding on who has an interest on the situation and determining what values are involved will create better solutions . Brainstorming solutions and looking for similar situations faced by other organizations can help also in the conflict resolution . He also suggests that discussing the solution with an ethics fanatic not directly involved in the situation can minimize threats and mistakes

Conventional methods like incorporating a strict code of ethics dictating conduct to members of the organization to accord with the highest ethical standards are often ineffective . Sometimes situations do not fit the stiff codes of conduct present in the work environment and this would only create new ethical dilemmas and lots of sentiments from the affected members . However , the price of unethical activities particular on accountability and trust , is also hard to bear for organizations . Many companies have fallen and disintegrated because of malpractice even in the executive level . Thus proves that genuine ethical standards and decision making is essential in business operations

In to have this genuine ethical standards and decisions an organization must keep ethics in the intuitive level . This can be done by (1 ) deciding what ethics should be , that it is not merely obeying the law , it isn 't fad , and has consequences (2 ) gaining the the approval and cooperation of the entire organization , and (3 ) teaching effective recognition and resolution of ethical issues
