Abstract

When it comes to environmental ethics , environmental issues often involve other problems : jobs , business profitability , etc . This is aimed at re-considering environmental ethical issues through the prism of various ethical theories and perspectives

Ethics Project

Introduction

Ethical issues are often interrelated and interlinked . As a result several ethical issues create a conjunction of ethical dilemmas which require complex approaches . There are several ethical issues in this case . First , the enterprise must

address environmental problems . Second the management must take into account the importance of the stable enterprise 's position for the employees and their incomes : relocating the plant will actually mean ruining the infrastructure of the whole town . Third , George has to weigh all pros and cons of his future decision : in case he is not able to take the proper decision he will be completely responsible for the negative consequences of such decision Fourth , George should also decide whether he can mislead the EPA by increasing plant emissions at night , and keeping them within the standard measures during the day when the measurements are taken

There are several decision makers in this case . First , George has to decide , how the company can avoid fines for environmental pollution without relocating the plant . Second , Bill promised to help George in the decision making process . As a result , Bill can also be included into the list of decision makers in the analyzed case . Third , George 's family also participates in the process of evaluating possible decisions Fourth , we cannot ignore the role of EPA in generating the relevant solution to the identified ethical issues . Fifth , there are also people who suffer from the plant 's pollution as opposed to those who risk losing their jobs in case the plant is re-located

There are the three major stakeholders in this case : the company , the employees , and the EPA . The major ethical conflict is developed among these three participants of the ethical issue . These stakeholders can take proper decision in case they unite their efforts . However , it seems that the company primarily strives at decreasing the level of the EPA fines by any means possible

Applying ethical theories

The major ethical issue is whether the company should deceive the EPA to keep the existing plant location , and to save employees from losing their jobs

In his categorical imperative , Kant has concentrated on the fact that all actions and people in the ethical decision making process should be considered not as the means towards something else , but as the ends in themselves (Boatright , 2006 . Moreover , ethical decision should become a universal law for the similar actions in the similar situations . This is why it is critically important to keep the current location of the plant . Employees must keep their jobs . Kant certainly rejects any idea of a human being a means of achieving something . To be objective employees for the plant are the means of making it effective and profitable...
