Generally , the sheriff is tasked of assisting courts in terms of aligning criminal procedures with existing court policies or of of major public offices Specifically , the office

of the sheriff is tasked of providing the court with a correctional facility the sheriff is almost always the one responsible for managing the correctional facility . In terms of law enforcement , the sheriff is the recognized head of the local police agency . He usually appoints the head of the police department and the corresponding officers based on the principle of objectivity and plain knowledge of the law . Although it may be argued that the office of the sheriff is not a plausible option of career maturity (since it is elected , it can be argued that the office itself is a career option for those aspiring for the said position . Based on a set of nominees , the town or county elects a sheriff based on perceived qualities suited for the office . The elected sheriff has the responsibility of appointing a deputy sheriff and a corresponding set of officers among those who were nominated . Even if the person is not elected sheriff , still he /she may be appointed by the sheriff to positions considered as waiting positions ' In this way , the chain of succession based on performance and expertise is maintained under the rubric of a democratic mechanism Now the primary tasks of the sheriff are as follows : 1 ) auditing public funds assigned thereof to law enforcement agencies (like the police ) in his area of responsibility , 2 ) assisting law enforcement agencies in providing necessary documents or evidences in court cases , 3 maintaining correctional facility under his care under terms determined by court , 4 ) appointing the head of the police agency , 5 ) supervising the enforcement agency in the creation of measures to safeguard the lives of citizens under his responsibility , and 6 ) maintaining training services for the employees of the office of the sheriff . It can be said that the sheriff is like an ordinary chief of police who roams around town , classifying whether a given act /s is in accord with existing laws or statutes . Added to that , the sheriff also accommodates appeals by individuals or group of individuals in questions related to public policy . In this case , he is directly responsible to the district-attorney in terms of law application and limited interpretation thereof . theless , because the sheriff is an elected public official he usually roams around town talking to people and listing the problems he /she encountered related of course to public policy
