Ethical Argument against the use of dolphins in the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program

Ethical Arguments against the use of dolphins in the U .S . Navy Marine Mammal Program

Introduction : a brief sketch of the issue

In recent times , the United States Navy has adopted a scheme so as to supposedly elevate the security measures and standards being called forth no only by the U .S . Navy but also by quite a number of American citizens who fear for their safety . The existing threats that are lingering towards human life were specifically identified , among the others , to be revolving around naval or marine concerns

In

the course of the scheme formulation , it has been proposed that the use of marine mammals be adopted for the reason that these animals are not only capable of serving and fulfilling the needed security measures that are ample enough to provide advance warning to possible threats and the actual removal of the imminent naval dangers

However , there were many issues raised by the scheme prior to and after its actual implementation . The bulk of these concerns are directed towards the issue of animal ethics , specifically that of the dolphins that are implicitly being put into harm 's way . That is , it has been claimed that these marine mammals also have the right to their lives quite similar to that of what human beings have

In connection to this , it is strongly being furthered by opposing groups to the naval scheme that the dolphins are actually being brought forward the possibility of losing their lives in the course of the stringent and dangerous marine missions that the U .S . Navy is most often concerned with

At the core of the debates that circumscribe the existing issue in the employment of dolphins by the U .S . Navy in marine security exploits there rests the strands of ethical arguments that attempt at resolving the conflict by advancing a form of animal ethics in harboring the needed premises for the eventual end of the use of marine mammals . There are quite a number of animal ethics that are being put forward in relation to the plight of dolphins with regards to the naval issues . In essence , all the arguments being installed by these ethical strands are basically aimed at seeking the best possible arguments needed not only to highlight the crude and gross effects of the implemented scheme but also the future implications that it brings along with it

Further , it can be noted that the existing debates that rest at the very heart of the issue are analogous to the opposition between human security in terms of naval threats and animal welfare in terms of animal utility in dangerous marine activities . As to whether which one has more weight in argument , it remains an open-ended question . Nevertheless , in spite of the predicament of resolving the conflict there still remains the fact that the welfare of marine animals , specifically that of dolphins , are being placed in the face of imminent danger

One cannot simply deny the fact that , although the welfare of...
