I would respond to a person who recommends a pay increase to reduce turnover by informing this person that money is a small portion of the equation . Other factors play a major role in deciding whether to stay in their jobs . These include their relationships with the company , boss coworkers , job satisfaction and availability of growth opportunity . An unfavorable work environment may still cause high turnover even if the pay is good . It is therefore important to diagnose and sort out the problem rather than increase pay because a balance must be achieved

to maintain staff and improve productivity

Many companies are downsizing as a tool to cut down labor costs . While it may help the organization when used occasionally , it may wreak havoc if used recklessly . High-performing and prized employees who are left behind may lose their morale if they observe their downsized colleagues being badly treated . Due to the taxing nature of downsizing on company resources , most managers employ poor tactics when downsizing . They fail to plan well and thus create a chaotic work environment . Studies show that survivors of badly managed downsizing experience anxiety and changes in attitude to work . Their productivity has also been shown to drop as well as decreased interest in customer satisfaction . These survivors will also readily leave if good opportunities present themselves
