Evaluating Piaget and Erikson 's Theories of Development

Piaget on Childhood by Siegler and Ellis (1996 ) further reinforced the hypothesis of Piaget that the cognitive development of children is affected by the cognitive changes in children particularly coming from conflicting ideas within themselves or interindividually or through social interactions . Piaget and Erikson had both been credited and can be considered to be the two most popular psychology theorists particularly in the cognitive and psychological development of children . Both theories contribute to the knowledge and understanding of children 's psychological and cognitive development : while Piaget focuses more on the cognitive aspect , Erikson focuses on the psychosocial aspect of children . Hence both theorists supports the presuppositions and claims of each other particularly in addressing the changes in children depending on the impact of individual and social factors . In the article , Siegel and Ellis (1996 ) discussed about the elements of constructivism essentialism and dynamism in illustrating the ability of children 's cognitive development to change or follow a particular pattern . This is in the same way that Erikson approached the psychosocial dimension of children development by addressing two differing patterns depending on the individual and social forces such as that of trust vs mistrust autonomy vs shame and doubt and so on

In essence , I agree with the conclusion of the study : the theoretical and empirical discussion strengthens and further reinforced both the theories of Piaget and Erikson particularly in pointing out the impact of individual and social changes as being important in the cognitive and psychological development of children . Hence , unlike biological theorists who attributes it to genetic materials or unlike social theorists who would attribute changes in the environment alone , Siegel and Ellis (1996 ) lends a convincing argument on the side of Piaget and Erikson that changes may occur depending on the cognitive development one experiences
