Equal Employment Opportunity : The Present

There are six federal laws that prohibit job discrimination . The U .S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC ) enforces each one . Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race , color , religion , sex , or natural origin . The Equal Pay Act of 1963 protects men and women performing similar job functions from sex-based wage discrimination . The act turned 40 in 2003 . The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 protects individuals that are age 40 and older

Title I

and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits discrimination of qualified disabled individuals in private industry as well as state and local government environments . Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibit discrimination of qualified disabled individuals in the federal government . Finally , The Civil Rights Act of 1991 provides monetary damages in intentional employment discrimination cases

The EEOC also provides oversight and coordination of all federal equal employment opportunity regulations and practices . There are other federal laws that are not enforced by the EEOC . The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 (CSRA ) contains a number of prohibitions , known as prohibited personnel practices , which are designed to promote overall fairness in federal personnel actions ( Federal EEO Laws .
