People usually connect winter days with sadness summer days with happiness . For some , it is just a matter of an understatement or believes that it 's all in one 's head . The truth is , there is actually a medical condition to explain this phenomenon - and it is called the seasonal affective dis . Tonello , he briefly discussed the SAD condition and was able to support his assumptions and conclusions using case studies . He also discussed the connection of the medical condition to light therapy and environmental psychology . According to him , SAD is a type of depression with a seasonal pattern that is attributed to shorter winter photoperiod (Tonello , 2008 . He also emphasized that though light ' is a contributing factor , there has been studies connecting the depression to areas that are close to the earth 's equator .
