Environmental Analysis : The Case of Southeast Asia Introduction The environmental status of the Southeast Asian region has caused alarm in recent times as the depletion of the forests coupled with the booming population of the 11 nations that are part of the region begins to take its toll on the environment . For instance , lack of information and sustainable laws have been perceived to be one of the roots of the problems that the governments in this regions needs to act upon To address this , the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN

comprised of the governments of Brunei , Cambodia , East Timor , Indonesia Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , the Philippines , Singapore , Thailand and Vietnam are working hand in hand to address the situation as soon as possible
Population Growth
Southeast Asia 's population had reached up to 1 .9 billion in 2005 . This number will continue to rise to a greater number in the following years It further contributes to the current world population of around 6 .5 billion which is expected that for the next 50 years would rose up to 9 billion people . This great number of inhabitants in the region will surely occupy much more space for residential purposes . Cutting down of tress , burning forests , caving in of mountains , etc , will be the result for finding a place these people will need to make their houses . And also the demand for food cannot be able to be sustained in the future . The capacity of the agricultural land in Southeast Asia cannot be able to produce a large amount of food that all of the needs of the people demands . The South China Sea and is slowly becoming a virtual trash can of the region that resulted to massive fish kills . Here are just some examples that are currently happening in the region and will surely worsen in the future if not much measures are implemented
An ASEAN study shows that resources that are needed to sustain life for the Southeast Asia are diminishing . Primary forests in the region are drastically vanishing due to cutting of trees and burning of some forests making it a site for industrialization or a residential area or for any other purposes . The sea and the ocean that were fished for food before has even now used for industrial and business purposes such as oil pumps on the water , etc . There is also a soil loss that can be used as an agricultural area . These land areas are degraded . Such are evidence of the resources that are of better needs that were lost
