Modernization is marked by the advances of mankind in infrastructure transportation , communication and other economic activities which entail harnessing the environment for commercial or economic use Unfortunately , the advancement of civilization came with an enormous price of destroying the environment to the detriment of man himself Today , there exists a myriad of environmental problems that threatens our health and the very existence of life . While the media have taken the necessary campaign to enlighten and combat the most comprehensively disastrous

consequences of environmental degradation , global warming one need not actually search for hazards because they are conspicuous in our very homes . The environmental hazards that are present in our homes comprised of the hazardous materials used in its construction such as lead (color paints , asbestos (used for insulation of furnaces ) and formaldehyde (insulation and electrical components the wasteful and inefficient architectural design of our residence which without proper ventilation can be susceptible to the dangers of radon , a radioactive gas that can enter homes via cracks on the ground or carbon monoxide emitted from burning fuels (e .g . firewood ) or a breeding ground for molds , which can cause allergies and asthma and the wasteful consumption of energy , which among others contribute to the biggest source of carbon dioxide emission derived from the burning of fossil fuels i .e . coal and natural gas , in power plants that generate electricity .
