ENTREPRENEURSHIP The growth of home-based business in the past several years is nothing short of a revolution . Already almost 40 million strong , new home-based businesses continue to sprout and flourish . There has been an increase in home-based businesses as a result of such factors as limited job opportunities , dependent care responsibilities , lower capital expenses entrepreneurial ambitions , secondary income generation and self-determination (Weltman , 2000 . Although motivations may vary , the main attractions of a home-based business relate to financial and family lifestyle consideration Advantages that should be considered when starting a home-based

business are lower overhead , work flexibility , tax shelter (tax deductions absence of commuting hassles , increased IRA benefits , no more putting up with someone else 's rules and regulations , no more office politics , the freedom to succeed or fail on one 's own merits , the ability to set one 's own hours , among many other attractive advantages . However , having a home-based business is not for everyone . If one is unprepared , an individual could not only receive a nasty shock , but could even bring down the business . Disadvantages which should be considered are potentiality of a home-based business owner feeling lonely and isolated especially those who like the social aspects of the workplace . Also since the notion of `office hours ' is absent , the propensity to overwork is present
Unfortunately , some communities are extremely hostile toward home-based businesses and actively try to prevent them . This is most likely to be the case if the community that the business is in is an affluent , purely residential community . Even if the business is unobtrusive , these communities may bar such activity if they discover its presence Likewise , some communities have cracked down on home-based businesses because of parking , traffic , signage problems , and items left stored in yards , the kind of trash that the home-based business generates within the community 's service limitations
