First , it is a vehicle for personal growth and development . English as a second language will enable a person to gain knowledge in all areas of discipline and to expand a person 's horizon . Information from books newss , the television , the radio , the internet and other sources are expressed and written in English . Individuals can learn and get more out of these sources when they understand English . It is said to be a key in learning about all other discipline areas in the academe . The English language likewise can broaden one 's horizon especially when one reads the experiences of others from books and stories . One does not just focus on his / her own language , group or culture but he /she goes beyond them . He /She sees another world other than his /her own

Second , the English language facilitates communication and social interaction with others . As Nunan (1999 ) puts it , language is a way of sharing ideas , telling people one 's experiences , and expressing emotions and feelings (p . 71 .This is applicable in situations where one meets a native English speaker or a person who doesn 't know your native language or when one travels to another country . A non-native English speaker will be confident to greet , make introductions , get information or give directions with a native English speaker or with a person whose language is not similar to him /her because he /she knows how to apply the rules of grammar

Third , English is valuable for career advancement . As a job applicant one will have to write an application letter and a resume in English After which , he /she will usually be interviewed using the English language . Thus , one has to respond in that language in to impress a prospective employer and to be able to get the job . And as an employee , one regularly receives business correspondence in English in the office and sometimes , has to write business correspondence in the same language

Lastly , the English language can contribute significantly to a person 's business growth . Locally , a company has to transact with people companies or organizations that use English when communicating . In doing business internationally such as importing or exporting products and services or putting up a business in another country , it will more likely involve using English as a medium of communication .
