Dumping of Household hazardous waste like consumer electronics fluorescent lamps , cleaning chemicals , batteries and medical waste have lead to deaths of pets in the locality

Waste disposal in the neighboring landfill has lead to increase of

various scavengers . An example is the birds that have become a nuisance to the communities living near the landfill . An increase in rodents and house flies has increased cases of cholera in the area

Communities that have previously depended on wells near the landfill cannot sink wells which have now been contaminated by waste seeping into the ground water

Waste incineration in the treatment plant has led to emission of thick fumes of smoke that irritate the communities residing near the plant

Overloading the landfill has lead to the obstruction of storm water leading to the formation of stagnant water bodies that have caused diseases to increase among the surrounding communities

The landfill workers and rag pickers have been affected by chemicals and toxins in the waste by trying to recycle some of the waste . There has been cases of skin diseases among the workers some of whom do not wear protective gear when handling waste

Plastics and nylon dumping has become a problem in the area . The plastics and s are blown away by wind into the neighboring farms where they are choking up the soil and affecting its fertility and ability to support plant life . Deaths of animals feeding on the plastics are also on the increase . Plastics have also caused aesthetic nuisance in the area surrounding the dump site

Hazardous waste has affected human health with children being the worst affected . Communities living near dump sites have suffered diseases due to direct exposure to the waste . Various studies carried out indicate an increase in diseases in populations living near dump sites . There has been an increase in chronic respiratory diseases among incinerator operators Direct dumping of waste in rivers , lakes and seas has lead to the accumulation of toxic substances in the food chain through plants and animals that feed on it . Resulting deaths have led to some species of animals becoming endangered and others extinct in various parts of the world
