In what ways can the journey in Graham Swifts `Last s` be compared to the journey in Kazuo Ishiguros `Remains of the Day`

Introduction

The novels of Grahan Swift and Ishiguro has significantly provided an idea of complex scenarios that are linked in various circumstances experienced by the protagonists , relived by the symbolisms , further heightens the complex environment at the nearing end of the scenarios and yet , furnish a simple theme existing in the two novels , Last s and The Remains of the Days

The novel The Remains of the Day

is far more subversive than the film and also indicates a change in the national mood . Ishiguro was eager to escape from stereotyping of his first two books as Japanese Consequently , for his next work he deliberately chose a butler , the most English of stock characters , as his central protagonist . Its main theme was not just the potential damage caused by the stiff upper lip , but a questioning of the entire nature of Englishness and its values . So , much to Ishiguro 's consternation , his attempt to avoid stereotyping was itself quickly stereotyped . The novel started in the year 1990 , second day of April wherein four friends initiated their journey from Bermondsey going to Margate with the goal of fulfilling the requests of their dead man , Jack Dodds . Jack the primary deceased character of the story who happened to provide the request , is 68 , while three of the four men exemplified in the story plot are his comrades . Upon the initiation of their quest , Jack 's son Vince , rented a Mercedes , the men feel , according to Ray "Like it 's something Jack has done for us , so as to make us feel special , so as to give us a treat .
