In Two Soldiers , it was very clear that the soldier chose his destiny , in that the character Pete did not actually have to go to war . Nobody dictated nor pushed him to go to war for his country , but he felt this sense of responsibility for his country and this pursued him to decide on joining the army . This was explained by the statement of Pete when he said I got to go ' and he means he got to go to war . It was not imposed to

him that he should be a soldier , but he chose his own path like he his own grave . The difference of this story from the poem is on the implication that Pete went to war for his love for country while it was not expressed in the poem that the soldier did it for his country . It seemed that the soldier had no choice

Faulkner was able to use irony to demonstrate how pain and suffering enriches . When the narrator who is also the younger brother of Pete looks for his brother and decides that he joins the army even though he 's only 8 years old then cuts the officer with his knife put the narrator in a situation where he was not treated as an 8-year old This showed the irony , because it was expected that the child be treated as one but instead the lieutenant talked to him like a man .
