Various citation styles are used depending on the category or nature of the . For instance , the American Psychological Association (APA style is most commonly used in research s in relation to social sciences such as psychology and political science while the Modern Language Association (MLA ) style is more commonly used in literature and media-related subjects . These two citations may be quite specific to their respective categories which is quite deviant from the Chicago Manual of Style as it has a broader scope that covers subjects in American English . The Chicago style is also clearly one of the oldest styles it uses footnotes to refer to some cited statements . APA and MLA somewhat have a similar structure with regard to in-text citations . The only difference is that APA includes the year of publication while MLA only includes the last name and page number .
