New York . Longman , 2000 . pg .216 Biography Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston , Massachusetts on January 19 , 1809 of actor parents . He was brought up in Richmond , Virginia by a wealthy tobacco merchant , John Allan following abandonment by his father in 1810 and the death of his mother less than a year later . Poe attended school in Scotland

and England . He published his first work in Boston titled Tamerlane and Other Poems ' under the pseudonym of Henri Le Rennet After intermittent stints in the army where he was eventually court-martialed , Poe worked for the Southern Literary Messenger
He married Virginia , his cousin , in 1836 and wrote The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym ' and `Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque ' The latter had a compilation of his classic short stories including `The Fall of the House of Usher , `The Manuscript found in a Bottle `Bernice , and `Ligeia . He wrote many more stories for several magazines . `The Murders in the Rue Morgue ' was published in 1840 . The Tell-Tale Heart ' was first published in 1843 . Poe took heavily to alcohol and other drugs following the death of Virginia in 1847 . He died in Baltimore on October 7 , 1849 after being found in the Baltimorean streets in a delirious state
