Effects of Watching T .V When as a kid , we watch cartoons . We get addicted to movies in youth . We are only interested in scientific programs and talk-shows when we are 40 . And , when we are retired we just can 't live without the latest news and soap operas . Whether we want it or not , television does play a great role in our life . It is a great source of information , commercials , fun and movies . Still , modern television is a double-edged sword and has many pitfalls to discuss . The range of TV-related issues goes far beyond this paper . We may dwell upon its usefulness , its valuable mass media character or its negative consequences . There are a lot of researches , statistics and other scientific data , which are dedicated to effects of watching TV , which , however , don 't demonstrate the situation as it is . In a nutshell , the effects of watching TV may be divided into cognitive , entertaining and negative . It goes without saying that to define exact borders between the different TV effects types is impossible - however , there is a certain trend , which allows me to make the above division . Cognitive effect is probably the one , which keeps us from severely criticizing the influence of television . Through watching scientific and research programs , we acquire new knowledge , develop ourselves and get educated . On the other hand , our teenagers , for whom education is crucial and who are the largest TV audience , do not have this motivation , as grown-ups do . Moreover , owing to TV , we learn about global events , we are kept updated on the latest news and we always know which tooth-paste is the best for our gums due to multiple and extremely informative commercials . In my opinion , cognitive effect can be considered positive however , it makes up only approximately one fifth of TV watching effects . When it comes to entertaining , watching TV is not a good alternative to , say , communication with friends , yet it makes up about 40 of the reasons why people watch TV . Watching a good movie together with friends or family doesn 't do any harm , except when it becomes the only way of spending time . Hence , the entertaining effect of watching TV is nothing but positive , when one know when to stop . Cartoons and entertaining programs for kids , by the way , can also be considered cognitive , since it is easy for children to learn things in such a way . Thus , we see here a sort of effect mix . Unfortunately , TV effects can be too negative and serious when people cease to see the border between the real and virtual . Children , whose consciousness is not mature , are becoming TV maniacs . Violence , drug abuse , sex on screen influences kids very much . How to protect them from the negative effects of watching too much television ? The access to TV screen must be limited . I am a firm believer that it is not the issue with ``violent ' television , but with the inattentive parents . TV habit should be tamed and television mustn 't... |
