These are students who have a higher probability of not excelling academically as compared to their peers . In most cases , their GPA is below average and many have to repeat several grades more than

once (Donmoyer and Kos , 1993 . Most At-risk students barely make it to graduate in time if by any chance they catch up with their academics (Hamovitch , 1997 . They are known to be potential dropouts if care is not taken to ensure that they get a positive insight about education . This group of students continues to be prevalent in Georgia and this has led to high dropout rates . According to Kids Count (2008 , Georgia was classified as the 41st State in high school dropout rates in the July 2008 . For many decades , schools have tried to wrestle with the challenges of At-risk students often designing programs and activities to help the students interact with their peers so as to improve their self-esteem (Miller and Lauer , 2004 O 'Connor 2001 . Remedial classes have also been offered in the evenings and during the holidays to help these students catch up with their counterparts and hence excel academically .
