Certain assumptions of multicultural education include the belief that it is necessary for students to cultivate an attitude of respect and appreciation for cultural diversity and to develop competencies that facilitate educational equality . It is also based on the assumption that people can only live progressively and effectively by expanding their cultural views of one another (Arceneaux , 1992 . This knowledge is reflected in the students ' ability to think critically while considering other people 's views , perspectives and the rationale behind their actions This is particularly necessary in times of conflict resolution and critical national issues . Learners all over the world will eventually need to live in a pluralistic world and should be prepared to function effectively in such a society . The assumptions are also based on the premise that no section or segment of society can function on its own without trying to understand or learn about other people 's culture (Arceneaux , 1992
The goal of multicultural education should be to create learning programs that target and encourage diversity by making sure that the students are aware of the various cultures , ethnic groups and traditions available and are willing to learn from themselves . Teachers should also be well aware of the different cultures available within a classroom so that there 's less conflict , a smooth flow of instructions and interaction within the classroom .
