Editing
Psycho Alfred Hitchcock 's 1960 classic film Psycho contains four obvious examples of film editing : graphic , rhythmic , spatial , and temporal Film editing is important because it allows an editor to connect one or more shots to form a sequence of shots . These shots are eventually all linked together to form the whole movie . However , these shots are not simply linked together ' They must be artistically placed , in a particular , to recreate what the director envisioned . The editor must also put together all of the elements of the story , including , but not

limited to , the music , visual effects , and the dialogue
Spatial refers to the number of separate points that are used on that roll . In other words , the relations between the shots function in to construct the film space . It allows the film to relate any two points based on similarity , difference , or development . Depending on the size of the film and the quality of lens that is used , the editor can make changes to the film based on how far apart certain scenes should be . In Psycho , this can be seen when the lead female is about to enter the shower . Although not as explicit as the other types of film editing , it is very obvious
Graphic refers to the way an editor can link scenes together by using particularly graphic scenes . In other words , it is the comparison of strictly pictorial qualities from shot to shot independent of space and time . It functions to achieve extremely smooth continuity or abrupt contrast . It also compares patters , such as light and dark and line and shape , as well as well as line and shape and movement and stasis . The most obvious example of this within the film Psycho is towards to the beginning , when the female lead arrives at the hotel . What makes this scene particularly unique is the way in which different layers are used in to make the opening seem more cohesive
Rhythm refers to the actual pace of the film , and how this is dictated by the editing . In other words , the relationship between shots control the film 's pace . This can be done in many ways , but one of the most recognizable ways is when shots are either lengthened or shortened in to slow or accelerate the tempo . It can also be done by equaling the lengths between shots in to create a steady , metrical beat This can be seen towards the beginning , when the female lead learns how ill the hotel manager 's mother is . This whole scene was put together quite slowly in for the pace to be quickened later on in the movie
Last but not least , temporal editing refers to how the relations between shots function to control time , in to convey the time period in which certain events happen . For example , this is seen in the infamous shower scene , when the viewer realizes how what has taken place before is significant to what is...
