Edgar Allen Poe
This essay will thoroughly review two literary works of Edgar Allan Poe - The Raven ' and The Tell-Tale Heart Both of the pieces deal about the same - death - but the author uses different perspectives (well presented in the two materials ) in dealing with it Death - First let 's talk about how the two materials deal with death The materials are alike in the sense that in the both pieces , the subjects are haunted by death but they differ in the how death ' affects them as subjects In The Raven , the subject is

haunted by death in the presence of a bird . Death ' haunts the subject in the form of fear and sorrow Among the two attacking elements however (fear and sorrow , sorrow takes over strongly . Upon the knocking of the bird , the subject feels a sudden fear . This fear is characterized by suspicion . When he develops a more intimate interaction with the bird , sorrow starts to take over when he realizes that the bird is reminder of a long lost love Lenore . For a few moments , he mourns over the loss of a beloved
In The Tell-Tale Heart , death , too , haunts the subject . However unlike in The Raven , the haunting causes a feeling of fear and regret . Upon the arrival of the policemen , the subject starts to feel fear but he hides it . Later on , his fear gets more and more intense and suddenly , he confesses about a crime which he has done
The Raven ' fears death because the subject is scared to face sorrow In The Tell-Tale Heart , the subject fears death because he is scared to confront guilt and regret about a wrong doing that he is to be punished for
Another important thing to point out about the literary pieces is that in both materials , both of the subjects are arguing against themselves In the first part of The Raven , the subject denies the possibility that the fowl visited him to remind the loss of a loved one . In the first part of The Tell-Tale Heart , the subject fights against himself whether or not to kill the old man
From this , we could say that both of the two pieces experiences a moment of denial ' which usually happens during the first part
It is also very interesting to note that the writer does not tell too much about the subject . Edgar Allan Poe does not directly reveal the identity of his subjects . He creates mystery and he leaves it to the readers to play and explore about the subject 's character . In The Raven , readers could only assume that the subject was a man Lenore ' sounds like a name of a woman , so we could say that the subject was a man and that he was once a lover of the lady mentioned . In The Tell-Tale Heart , assumptions are difficult to be made . While I may not want to make generalizations out of gender norms , I think that the subject 's gender is closer to that...
