Most urban areas in the world experienced a great growth in the 1970 (s during the industrial revolution . This happened when employment level increased in the urban centre at the industries absorbed the people . In this way there was concentration of economic and political power as the cities grow and increase its potential to create more opportunity for people . As the urban areas grew fast , there was a lot of rural urban migration as people seek and look for

better jobs in urban areas However , even though this urban areas and cities were growing fast people living in the cities were living poorly . This was caused by increasing wealth , inequalities , lack of popular participation fully of the government in the cities , problems of budgetary constraints unemployment caused by rural urban migration . Typically , the approaches implemented to sustain urban development had eventually been benefiting the minority as the majority of people in the urban areas languished in poverty despite the urban development . They lacked basic needs i .e . had poor quality housing , insecurity in place of residents , poor health standards , lack of enough food supply

The approaches used in urban development were aimed at concentration of economic and political power in the cities . This also involved centralizing industrial development in the cities . This is the long run had a good impact to the urban dwellers . As more industries were established in the cities , there were a lot of positive changes that were experienced . These changes included better , health services and facilities were available , more jobs opportunities in the cities , roads and infrastructure were improved , living standard of urban people was improved , etc . Population in the urban areas continued to increase especially due to urban- rural migration and hence in this way the development of cities increased at vast pace . All in all as the cities grew and more industrial plants were established , the pollution also increased due to poisonous gases and other effluents were going into the urban environment .
