. In East of Eden ' John Steinbeck shows the difference between good and evil , by incorporating similarities with the biblical story of Cain and Abel , along with the struggle that is love , and the use of symbols in the state of California
The central character of the novel is Cal Trask . Cal Trask is the son of Adam Trask and the brother of Aron . Cal holds a manipulative nature to him . He thinks very guilty when he upset people intentionally or unintentionally . Cal signifies Cain in the bible . In the novel , Cal feels bitter in the direction of him brother Aron . Their father looks like to favor Aron all through the novel . This produces Cal desire to search for revenge against his brother , Aron . The antagonist in the novel is Cathy Ames . Cathy Ames is full of evilness . She is although of as being an animal . Cathy murders her parents by burning their house down with them inside . She then seeks to kill Adam and Mr . Edwards . The person who reads never identifies what she is thinking or about to do this creating the novel 's expense . The only normal things about Cathy seem to be her looks . Since the only love she know is hatred
Present day a father 's love is unconditional , but in this novel a father 's love in this family is signified as conditional . Cyrus loves Adam because he is a "good boy " but Charles is evil and dangerous making him very hard to like or even love . Adam loves Aron because he is full of honesty and has pride in what he does . Caleb is likeable but also hard to love because of his unseen evilness . If Cyrus ' or Adam 's love had been unconditional with both sons careless of their personality , the evilness of Caleb and Charles might have been erased because they no longer would be bitter towards his brother
