Abstract
The past few years have witnessed an enlargement of the European Union (EU , not just in scope but also in mandate . This explores the EU with a particular emphasis on Finland as a core European nation . It is found that the primary reason behind Finland 's decision to join the union was due to security concerns influenced largely by geopolitics and political culture . Regarding Finland 's relationship with EU , the country had a warm and cozy relationship with the bloc especially during the first 8 years of its membership . However , the relationship has lately deteriorated , with Finland taking extremist positions on vital issues such as the Constitutional Treaty
