In a business firm or any or in any organization , the workers are the most important resource since they directly determine how far the firm succeeds in achieving its objectives . Performance in turn is determined by how dedicated and engaged the employees are and these are factors which are determined by employee performance appraisals . The approach that a manager uses to evaluate an employee 's performance therefore determines a lot on how the employee will be

motivated and increase his or her productivity

In my opinion , evaluating the performance of an employee based on what a manager thinks he or she deserves is unfair and unjust . An employee 's performance should be based on what his or her work entails . This is because effective management of human resources requires the management to set attainable goals so that all employees can know what is expected of them . Without goals to attain , there will be a lack of direction . It is how committed an employee is to achieving goals that should be used in evaluating performance

Appraisals based on performance are ethically and legally justifiable and since they are based on open and just criteria , they are more acceptable and they also provide room for feedback and identification of developmental and organizational problems .
