Social and academic language differ in many ways but this does not mean that they are two separate concepts . They are both language functions although much of the difference lies in usage . The use of social or academic language depends on the occasion of speech . Their use is widely connoted in their names as well

Social language refers to the day-to-day language used by communicators They may be spoken or written . The same is also called Social English by English speakers , and the

same is true with communicators of other languages . Thus , it is not surprising to hear Social French or Social Spanish . This type of language is purely conversational and easy to use on common communication practices . Academic language , on the other hand , involves fluency in the language and the ability to use it in a formal or professional context . In school , students answer to questions according to the standards of the schoool or the professor . This is an example of academic language . A term or a thesis also uses academic language .
