Ku , Agnes S .M Pan , Yi . Remaking Citizenship in Hong Kong : Community Nation and the Global City . Cont . B .S . Turner . Routledge . 2004

This book is a valuable resource in putting Hong Kong in a historical perspective . The authors give a detailed account Hong Kong 's civil society as it was during the British rule . The book is divided into s that discuss at length various civil issues such as health care education , social security , immigration , etc , in the context of its times . The author then presents the

changes after the handover took place , describing in detail the specific issues and the effects that it had on the people

In so far as my is concerned , I will be able to use the book as the primary context of my entire , upon which I can ultimately forward my ideas about the handover . I will be able to use excerpts from the book to be able to compare how civil society as it exists before and after Hong Kong was returned to China

The book itself does not make its own evaluations for or against the handover the book just presents facts of how Hong Kong civil society was then and how it is now . This objective stand is all the more valuable because it does not color my views in any way and allows me to make my own inferences and value judgment .2

Calick , Rowan . Comrades Capitalists : Hong Kong Since The Handover UNSW Press . 1998

Callick , an Australian reporter , provides us with a first hand view of Hong Kong barely a year after Britain returned her to China . He intersperses his writing with anecdotes which adds a more personal touch to his accounts . In way , Callick redefines the issues of the handover from an issue of national policy to an event that has acute and far-reaching consequences to individual lives . He brings a human face to the Hong Kong handover , as he tells the stories of actual people whose lives have been affected in various ways by the change

The main value of this book to me is the fact that it was written just a year after the Hong Kong handover . As such it provides my with a valuable resource to be able to study the struggles of Hong Kong fresh from transition . I hope to use this book as a jump-off point within the introduction and then as I develop my , I will determine whether the difficulties and problems of transition have been resolved or whether these issues have persisted ten years after the handover

Another aspect about this book that I find very useful and interesting at the same time is that Callick takes into account how mainland China is affected by the handover as well . Most books and articles about the handover focus only on Hong Kong and its people , overlooking the fact that it is equally important to consider the perspectives of China and Britain as well 3

Marton , Andrew Mark . Hong Kong in China : Perspectives from the Region World

Scientific . 1999

The East Asian Institute (EAI , which published this book , is a research organization which primarily studies social , political and economic trends in Asian countries and how these trends affect the region as a whole in particular , EAI is keen on the effects of the emergence of China as a global power . EAI makes these researches and scholarly articles in the hopes of enlightening local policy makers in making laws that will contribute to the region 's collective growth

This volume is unique because it focuses on how several neighboring countries view the handover . The countries involved in the discourse are Malaysia , Taiwan , Indonesia , Thailand , Singapore , and New Zealand and each of these countries offer a fresh insight on the handover This book brings to fore the fact that no country exists in isolation and the events that are happening within Hong Kong have an impact particularly to those foreign countries that are close , either by distance or trade relations . I should be able to use these perspectives and see the economic and political importance of Hong Kong to the region and what specific role does it play in the global market 4

This article was written by Robert Manning , a senior fellow of Progressive Policy Institute (PPI . PPI 's mission is to espouse and forward progressive politics for contemporary America . As a research agency , the Institute publishes articles and journals to help shape policy

In this article , Manning takes a long , hard look at Hong Kong to check whether China was able to deliver on its promises to keep the status quo and keep Hong Kong progressive and prosperous . This article is all about politics and policy what effects does the handover have over US-China relations and whether the existing policies should be changed or not

Manning explores the changes that the US should make in far as relations with China are concerned . Manning also acknowledges the importance of Hong Kong in protecting the United States ' economic interest in the region . I will be able to use this in the analysis of the dynamics that a world superpower brings into the handover equation . What effects if any did the handover have on North American soil ? And how does a superpower protect its vested interests by using its clout to initiate the changes that it wants to be done . Clearly , when measuring the success of the handover , it is important to consider the stand of the powerful United States , and this is what this allows me to do 5

Ash , Robert . Hong Kong in Transition : One Country , Two Systems Routledge . 2003

Robert Ash 's "Hong Kong in Transition " offers the one of the latest accounts of post-colonial Hong Kong . The book was written six years after the handover and as such , is able to capture Hong Kong after a considerable period of Chinese rule . Robert captures a snapshot of Hong Kong at just the right time not to early to detect discernible change and not too late to erase the vestiges of colonial rule from the minds of the people . The book is written when the people of Hong Kong can still remember what it was like under British rule , and compare the difference now that they are under China 's control

The particular appeal of this volume lies in its multidisciplinary approach . Each individual chapter is independent and may be read individually or taken as collectively as part of the bigger picture Contributors to this volume come from all over the world , with each of them sharing their own Hong Kong stories . As such , the book provides a kaleidoscope of views that I can use to reinforce the arguments that are for and against the handover and be able to synthesize them into a logical conclusion

This journal article looks provides us with an in-depth look at Hong Kong 's human resource situation . Particularly it focuses on the changes that have been made after the handover , in so far as employee relations recruitment , retention , benefits , etc , are concerned . What makes this article very useful in my research is that it provides me with a unique and highly narrowed point of view on how to gauge Hong Kong ten years after the turnover . Looking at the state of Hong Kong 's labor situation is one very effective way of determining whether the handover was beneficial to the people or not
