What is drug abuse ? It is the use of a drug in a frequent manner to the extent that it causes mental and physical harm to the users . Drug abuse refers to the addictive use of psychoactive substances like alcohol and other illegal drugs . It can also be defined as the use of illegal drugs or the use of drugs for other purposes besides medical reasons (Twombly Holtz and Tessman , 2008 . Use of

drugs in a manner or quantity other than what is indicated by physicians amounts to drug abuse . There are very many drugs that are used in the society today for mood-altering purposes . There are other substances that are being utilized for mood altering reasons that are not drugs . These substances include inhalants and solvents . There are also drugs used in the society today that are not for mood-altering purposes like anabolic steroids . The general understanding of substance abuse is the use of illicit drugs . According to various studies that have been conducted on the issues of drug abuse the rate of the abuse has increased in the past decade (Flowers , 1999 There are those drugs that are considered mostly abused in our society today .
