Define domestic terrorism

Under the USA Patriot Act of 2001 (amending title 18 , 2331 of the United States Code , domestic terrorism has been defined as those activities which

(A ) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or any State

(B ) appear to be intended -

(i ) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population

(ii ) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion or

(iii ) to affect the conduct of

a government by mass destruction assassination , or kidnapping and

(C ) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States

In what ways is it functionally different from international terrorism

Domestic terrorism differs from international terrorism in the sense that while international terrorism is primarily a global concern and is regulated under the international law , domestic terrorism operates within a specific territory or state and is thus within the control of the affected state . Domestic terrorism can be committed by any individual or group of individuals in a given state . As to international terrorism , United Nations Security Council has come up with its own list of organizations which it considers as terrorist organizations although it has not yet been able to formulate a concrete definition of international terrorism

Distinguish between domestic terrorism from above vs . domestic terrorism from below . Give examples

There is domestic terrorism from above when persons who are legally empowered use , or threaten to use , political violence to maintain or defend political power in their domestic bs , or to maintain defend , overthrow , or undermine the political power of other nations within the international community . In domestic terrorism from below persons use or threaten to use , political violence either to undermine or overthrow the existing government or simply to intimidate individuals or groups which they consider as threat to the social , political economic and ideological of society . An example of terrorism from above is the divide and conquer strategy that was employed by the white wealthy landowners during the 17th century in to prevent class revolution among the white and black slaves . In this case , the elite group devised a scheme to reorganize the American society based on class and race . An example of a group engaged in domestic terrorism from below is the Ku Klux Klan , a white supremacists group which intimidates and oppresses racial and religious minorities such as the African Americans the Jews and the Roman Catholics
